Wonthaggi and Surrounds Beaches

From Coal Point near Wonthaggi through to Kilcunda there is a 12km stretch of almost straight coastline.

Description: This coastal stretch includes beaches such as Cutlers Beach, Williamsons Beach, Baxters Beach and the Mouth of the Powlett River. This coastline is dominated by sandy beaches but broken by numerous rocks and reefs, particularly toward Coal Point near Wonthaggi and the mouth of the Powlett River, toward Kilcunda. Car access is restricted to the Mouth of the Powlett River, Baxters Beach, Williamsons Beach and Kilcunda car parks.  All the beaches face south-west and receive the full force of the south-westerly winds and waves. There are usually at least 40 rips along the six beaches.

  • These beaches may have strong rips and currents and are not patrolled by Lifesavers. For more information visit www.lifesavingvictoria.com.au
  • Popular for surfing and beach walking
  • Food- Local cafes, restaurants and supermarkets can be found in the township of Wonthaggi
  • Access- From these car parks the beaches can be accessed by walking along the designated sand dune paths.
