Berninneit
Berninneit (Burn-eh-neet) cultural centre is the heart of art, performance, community and culture in Cowes, Phillip Island.
Description
The building houses a performing arts space and cinema, gallery, library, historical museum, events spaces and community meeting rooms, as well as Bass Coast Shire Council's Customer and Visitor information service for Cowes.
The Passivehaus building was $27.2 million major project, that commenced in March 2022 and opened to the public on 02 November, 2023.
Meaning "Gather Together", the name Berninneit is a Boon Wurrung word selected by the community, following Council's decision to to name the building with a First Nations naming word as an act of reconciliation.
Berninneit is operated as part of Bass Coast Cultural Venues. The 260 seat performing arts space and cinema offers a full program of events including new release cinema, music, dance, comedy and theatre, alongside community events and venue hire.
